Right now, Oculus is rolling out v25 software update, which will add the App Lab feature to your Oculus Quest headsets. Think of it as an early access store/SideQuest store, where users can check out these titles that doesn’t meet Oculus’ strict curative measures (when you head to the link of the title under App Lab, you will see a disclaimer indicating that they may contain unknown issues such as comfort, performance or other factors, and may be experimental or in development).
Oculus is unveiling App Lab today, which is said to make it easier for developers to safely distribute apps (that are unapproved for official release) without the need for sideloading.
This leads to the emergence of SideQuest, where Quest users can sideload unapproved VR titles to use on their headsets. Unfortunately, this stance is a double-edged sword, as it also means there are some VR titles that the users really want to experience but couldn’t because they were blocked by Oculus. Oculus has been curating the Oculus Quest Store to ensure that they only offer high quality VR titles to its Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 users.
